As a little girl born in Liberia, West Africa; designing clothing has been a family business and way of life.
Therefore, fashion design is a passion and talent that has been carefully cultivated over many years as a child from watching and being taught by my mother who was a Seamstress and Home Economics Teacher as she designed and sewed clothes for sale at the same time teach at public schools and going to villages to teach underprivileged women Home Economics and Sewing.
From designing my own prom and special occasion dresses to working as personal stylists for weddings and small events; I found the courage pursue that which has been deposited in me by my mother. Today, my focus is bringing back the root of African Fashion with a modern twist to embrace our current generation by creating its demand for everyday and all occasions.
African fashion is more than just the rich solid prints; it is rather the celebration of beautiful skin tones and different body types. My intention is to make our presence known and felt not by what we wear alone but by whom we are and what we represent – that’s the beauty of elegance.
Since our launch in 2013, Elegance by Olive has been a steady fabric on the local and national fashion scene.
We have received invitation to participate in the 2014 Ronald McDonald’s House of Charity fashion event in Charlotte, NC, Metro Style Fashion show, Johnson and Wales University Fashion Projects and Shows. Also, Elegance by Olive was one of the headline designer at the 2014 New York City Fashion Week and The Charlotte International Fashion Week. We have also been involve in fashion shows and events in Atlanta, GA, Silver Springs, MD, as well as Columbia, SC.
Elegance by Olive is in the process and planning stages of opening the first International Fabrics and Fashion Center which will include work study programs and sewing tutorials in Charlotte, North Carolina.
